a vita diventa piuttosto difficile se hai quindici anni, sei prigioniero nelle isole del Sol Levante, non parli la lingua e tutti sono convinti che tu sia uno yokai, cioè una creatura a metà strada tra un demone e uno spirito.
Chiaro avrebbe voluto diventare ricco come Marco Polo e invece è finito nei guai fino al collo. Eppure gli sembrava una buona idea partire all’avventura da Nuova Venezia – semi sprofondata nel mare dopo la Grande Crisi Planetaria – e unirsi a una spedizione commerciale diretta in Oriente. Invece, sulla costa cinese la carovana è stata assalita dai predoni. Sono morti tutti, tranne Chiaro, risparmiato solo per essere venduto insieme al bottino in quelle misteriose isole che da secoli non hanno più contatti con il resto del mondo. Laggiù un ragazzo biondissimo e pallido come lui suscita curiosità, paura e superstizioni.
Chiaro riesce a scappare dai suoi rapitori, salva anche un cucciolo di volpe trovato per caso nella foresta, ma non può sfuggire alle onna-bugeisha, micidiali donne guerriere paragonabili ai samurai.
Riprende i sensi in una gabbia. Ora tutti lo chiamano kitsune e lo temono come una delle leggendarie volpi mutaforma.
Ma il vero nemico si nasconde altrove, in un paese dominato dalla legge della spada, là dove ogni albero – letteralmente – può nascondere un vero yokai…
ife becomes rather difficult when you are a fifteen-years-old prisoner in the islands of the Rising Sun, you don’t speak the language, and everyone thinks you are a yokai, a creature somewhere between a demon and a spirit.
Chiaro’s aim was to become as rich as Marco Polo and instead got into trouble up to his neck. Yet he thought it was a good idea to set off on an adventure from New Venice – half sunk into the sea after the Great Planetary Crisis – and join a trading expedition bound for the East. Instead, on the Chinese coast the caravan was attacked by marauders. Everyone died except Chiaro, spared only to be sold along with the loot on those mysterious islands that have had no contact with the rest of the world for centuries. There, a boy as blond and pale as he is arouses curiosity, fear and superstition.
Chiaro manages to escape from his captors, even rescues a fox cub found by chance in the forest, but he cannot escape the onna-bugeisha, deadly warrior women comparable to samurai.
He wakes up in a cage. Now everyone calls him kitsune and fears him as one of the legendary shape-shifting foxes.
But the real enemy hides elsewhere, in a country dominated by the law of the sword, where every tree – literally – can hide a real yokai…
Era tutto vero, gli altri avevano sempre avuto ragione… Yokai. Non sapeva nemmeno come tradurre quel concetto: erano i mostri delle favole? Creature maligne? Protettori soprannaturali?
